I currently maintain two different blogs for two different reasons.
Serial Distractions is my “writing” blog…it is the home of “Shedrick the Writer” and his “writerly” stuff. I post my stories, reviews of other works about writing, literary con reports, etc. It is geared toward my professional (and semi-professional) writing endeavors.
My other blog, Pencil Neck Geek, is my “personal” blog…home of “Shedrick the Geek” and his personal ramblings/musings/etc. Here I post reviews of movies I like, talk about my life and the people in it, geek-out about various pop-culture events, etc. It is where I’m “just a guy”…an incredibly geeky one, but just me nevertheless.
As I begin to write more and visit blogs of other people I admire (Mur Lafferty and Wil Wheaton, for example) I’m wondering if I should consolidate my efforts into a single blog. “Shedrick the Writer” is the same person as “Shedrick the Geek”. By separating my efforts into these two directions, am I’m splitting myself unnecessarily? Am I spreading myself too thin?
Granted, bloggers like Wil Wheaton are not only good authors but are also appealing personalities. People not only read him because he’s a great writer (and he is) but because, let’s face it, he’s Wil Wheaton. I can’t really claim that level of interest.
If I refer to myself as a writer, I always feel as if I need to add various caveats (wannabe-writer, aspiring-writer, part-time-writer, etc.). Maybe if I am just “Shedrick the Writer” and also blog about my geeky stuff then I can be more confident in introducing myself, and thinking of myself, as an actual writer. On the other hand, though I’m not always a serious writer, I want to be taken seriously as a writer. So maybe posting a blog in my “writer’s residence” about my latest geek-obsession, however interesting it may be, will not get me further down that road.
There is my dilemma, oh sages of the blogosphere. Any thoughts? Any guidance? Feel free to comment!
In the meantime, feel free to check out either of my homes:

Note: As you read this blog entry, you probably encountered some “self-referential” links. This is due to the fact that this post will be broadcast on two different blogs. Thanks for your patience…the Management.
