A few months back I posted this about the struggles of Anissa Mayhew and her family. If you don’t remember, Anissa is a blogger that I had started to follow before she had a major stroke and was out of commission for a while. The blogosphere banded together to help her and her family with support and cashy-monies.
Well, Anissa is back! She still struggles and has to work so hard every day to push herself back into “normalcy” (whatever that is…), but she’s recovering, surviving, and thriving!
But, let her tell you in her own words…
I write every day.
I exercise every day.
I parent every day.
I try to be a little more normal every day.
I have three kids. In a wheelchair, with a right leg that doesn’t work the way most right legs do, a right arm that moves funny when a few months back it didn’t move at all, a face that’s crooked with an eye that doesn’t go back and forth correctly, I’ve always been a mom.
I have worked viciously for every bit of my independence. I take pride in making the progress I do. I let myself cry when it feels like too much.
And, believe me, it does sometimes.
The word hero gets bandied about a lot these days…too often, usually. But Anissa really is a hero. She’s taken a harrowing journey and emerged on the other side…not unscathed, but still fighting. She’s no saint and has no superpowers…other than her drive, which is a power that we can all strive to have.
